If you want to reach the top you can use either the Pilatus Railway, the world's steepest cogwheel railwayfrom Alpnachstad, or with the aerial panorama gondolas and aerial cableways from Kriens.
Pilatus’ Name
There are a few different local legends about the origin of the mountain's name.
One claims that Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea who presided over the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, was buried there and that’s how it took its name, while another legend says that dragons used to live there. Also because of its shape, since is the mountain looks like the belly of a large man, many believe that this man is Pilate lying on his back and was thus named from him. The name may also be derived from "pileatus," meaning "cloud-topped."
